Gary Lineker has congratulated Manchester City after two of their players were announced as the Premier League's player and young player of the season, holding off a challenge from Liverpool.
Belgian midfielder Keven De Bruyne has been declared the Premier League Player of the Season while his English team-mate Phil Foden has picked up the Young Player of the Season accolade. Despite Liverpool's continued push for an unprecedented quadruple of major honours, it is City who still sit one point clear at the top of the table ahead of the final day of an enthralling campaign.
De Bruyne has enjoyed a superb season for Pep Guardiola's side, scoring 15 league goals in 29 appearances, as well as providing seven assists. The midfielder edged out Mohamed Salah for the award, despite the Egyptian being crowned the Football Writers' Player of the Year earlier this month. Salah's Liverpool team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold was also shortlisted for the award.

Writing about the announcement on social media, Lineker said: "Congratulations to @DeBruyneKev on being voted Premier League player of the season. It’s been a delight to watch this incredibly gifted and driven footballer. What a player."
Alexander-Arnold also made the shortlist for the Young Player of the Season award, but that honour has been bestowed on De Bruyne's City team-mate Foden.
Congratulating Foden, amid a crowded field of talent, Lineker tweeted: Congratulations to @PhilFoden on being voted Premier League young player of the year. A truly wonderfully talented footballer. The competition was tough with so many fabulous young players. It’s a very exciting time for English football."
Liverpool supporters will be hoping that City's Premier League award double is the last form of silverware heading to the Etihad this season. The Reds must beat Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday and hope that the leaders fail to beat Aston Villa at the same time, in order to clinch a record-equalling 20th league title for Jurgen Klopp's side in the most dramatic fashion.
