Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer send messages to Erling Haaland after striker's Man City debut

Gary Lineker waxed lyrical about 'unstoppable' Erling Haaland after the Manchester City striker netted two key goals on his Premier League debut. Haaland was on target in each half as the reigning champions started their latest title defence with a 2-0 victory over West Ham.

Having missed out on signing England captain Harry Kane last summer, City turned their attentions to Haaland and won the race for his signature. He cost £51million after emerging as one of the hottest prospects in Europe while at Borussia Dortmund and has taken instantly to life back in the UK.

Born in Leeds, the Norway sensation proved to be the match-winner for City in the Sunday afternoon opener with his first-half penalty and a trademark run and finish upon the restart. It was some way to silence his critics after the Community Shield defeat against title rivals Liverpool.

With bigger targets in mind, Haaland was ruthless on his first Premier League outing and added another menacing string to the City bow with immense running power and clinical finishing. It drew him many plaudits before, during and after the match as Lineker added his name to that list on social media.

Addressing his 8.5million followers, Lineker tweeted: "He's unstoppable is Erling Haaland. A proper striker whose goal-scoring numbers will be huge. A truly prodigious talent."

Alan Shearer, the Premier League's all-time record scorer with 260 goals, simply wrote: "258 to go!!!!"

Haaland, 22, scored 85 games in 88 games for Dortmund and has two in as many competitive appearances for City following his £51million switch. Along with England midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, he was brought in to offset the departures of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus.
