Gary Lineker aims sly dig at Nottingham Forest after Leicester City debacle

Nottingham Forest’s heavy defeat on Monday evening was painful for Reds fans but enjoyed by all those of a Leicester City persuasion, none more so than Gary Lineker.

Forest dropped to the foot of the Premier League table after a defeat that felt inevitable from the moment James Maddison put the home side in front in the 25th minute. Harvey Barnes doubled their lead two minutes later and Maddison added a third before the break to put the Foxes firmly in control.

Nevertheless, a fourth from Patson Daka in the 73rd minute ensured Forest's beleaguered goal difference took a further hit, intensifying the pressure on Steve Cooper.

The margin of victory provided a measure of revenge for Leicester’s 4-1 FA Cup thumping at the City Ground last season. It was also the Reds’ first defeat to Leicester since May 2013.

However, even allowing for his former side’s first-half dominance, Lineker was initially reluctant to stick his head above the parapet. Posting on Twitter, the Match of the Day presenter said: “Keeping my gob shut until the end of the game. I do realise some of you would like that to be permanent.”

He went on to tweet: "Just don’t want to jinx @LCFC even though I don’t believe in that nonsense."

Following the win, however, Lineker was back to his prolific best, revelling in the moment and proclaiming the Foxes as the “best team in the land”, before going on to clarify “that is East Midlands”.
