Kate Middleton’s uncle, Gary Goldsmith, has sparked controversy with his appearance on the latest season of Celebrity Big Brother U.K. due to his history of domestic abuse. Goldsmith, 58, was arrested in October 2017 for assaulting his fourth wife, Julie-Ann Brown, during an argument outside their London home. The incident involved Goldsmith punching his wife in the face, causing her to hit her head on the ground. He later pleaded guilty, was fined $6,000, and received a 12-month community order with 20 sessions of rehabilitation. Goldsmith and Brown are now divorced.
Women’s Aid, a U.K. charity working to end domestic abuse, expressed disappointment with Goldsmith's inclusion on the reality show. The charity criticized the production team for lacking awareness of the impact such casting choices have on survivors of domestic abuse. They urged the producers to consider the message sent to viewers, particularly women who have experienced abuse.
In response to the backlash, a spokesperson for Celebrity Big Brother stated that all housemates undergo training in language and behavior before entering the house, with strict monitoring of behavior at all times. Goldsmith, who is the younger brother of Carole Middleton, Kate's mother, shared fond memories of his niece and Prince William in a promotional clip for the show.
Despite the criticism, Kensington Palace declined to comment on Goldsmith's participation in the show. In an interview, Goldsmith assured that he would not bring any stress to his family, acknowledging the challenges they are currently facing. The businessman joins a diverse lineup of contestants for the revamped series, including Sharon Osbourne and Netflix’s Heartstopper actor Bradley Riches.
