Garrick Club and Women’s Institute swapping members would benefit society

One Garrick Club member is quoted as saying that he will immediately apply to join the Women’s Institute (‘No longer remotely defensible’: Garrick’s decision to admit women shows times have changed, 7 May). Wouldn’t it be wonderful if their memberships could swap en masse? The Women’s Institute could run the elite organs of state and the Garrick could devote its talents to local communities. I would prefer that kind of society.

• There is only one reason that the outmoded and misogynistic Garrick Club continued to exist: men continued to join. I’m bored by those very same men now telling me what a good thing they did by voting to let women in.
