Manchester City striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw now sits alone as the top goalscorer in the Women’s Super League after she nodded home her 10th goal of the campaign on Saturday in the 2-0 win over Leicester City.
Second-half substitute Laura Coombs provided the cross that dipped perfectly for Shaw to meet to head over goalkeeper Janina Leitzig. Her effort flew into the top corner, breaking the hour-long stalemate at the King Power Stadium.
Chloe Kelly’s stunning strike secured the three points for the visitors 15 minutes from time, a win that sees City extend their unbeaten run to 16 games in all competitions.
Manager Gareth Taylor said of the result: "We were probably a bit wasteful in the first 20 minutes, the game could've been dead and buried, but saying that, their goalkeeper was inspired, it was going to take something special to beat the goalkeeper and I thought it was a special goal from Bunny Shaw.
"I actually felt we weren’t going to score from a cross in the air – and that’s exactly what we scored from, so what do I know? It was a great ball in and a really good header from Bunny, it was a special header. If she puts more power into it, she probably misses the target so it was a really class header.”
Shaun Goater has taken Shaw under his wing this season to help show the young Jamaica international how she can improve her movement and develop her game.
Shaw headed into the weekend joint-top goalscorer in the WSL, with Aston Villa's Rachel Daly also on nine goals. However, the latter failed to find the net at home to Brighton and so Shaw now sits alone as the top scorer on 10 goals from just 11 games - her strike against Leicester also sees her surpass last season's tally of nine goals in 17 outings.
City had no fewer than 30 shots against the Foxes, 18 of which hit the target. Taylor's side have now moved up to third in the WSL table and are a point ahead of Arsenal, with the Gunners set to face West Ham on Sunday.
Taylor said of his message to his side at half-time vs Leicester: “The message at half-time was that we needed to be a bit more patient in the final third. I felt we could create a bit better chances. We spoke afterwards and said we could have had five or six today quite easily in the first half.”
