Gareth Southgate's deadline to hand England call-up to Man Utd record-breaker Anthony Elanga

Gareth Southgate may have just two weeks to persuade Anthony Elanga to represent England at international level.

The Manchester United forward has scored three goals in all competitions this season and is currently flourishing under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

At 19 years and 302 days, he became United's youngest ever Champions League knockout stage goalscorer on Wednesday after finding the net against Atletico Madrid.

Elanga was born in Malmo and has 16 youth caps for Sweden. His record at U21 level is very impressive, scoring seven goals in eight outings.

The Swedes are set to face Czech Republic in their World Cup play-off on March 24, with manager Janne Andersson expected to announce his team in around two weeks' time.

Elanga will not be ineligible to play for England if he plays in that game, as a player can make up to three competitive appearances and still switch allegiance.

That rule is only valid, however, if the player makes those outings under the age of 21 and are not in the "final stage" of a tournament.

Although a debut against the Czechs wouldn't rule out an England cap, Elanga would be unlikely to change his international allegiance afterwards.

According to The Sun, Southgate and his backroom staff have been tracking the talent's progress. Andersson is also thought to be keeping a close eye on him.

Elanga is eligible to play for England after living in the country for seven years, moving to Manchester aged 12 and signing for United shortly after.

He is also eligible to play for Cameroon, as his dad Joseph was part of their squad for the World Cup in 1998. The left-back made 17 senior appearances for his country.

Elanga is one of United's best young players, winning the club's Young Player of the Year award in 2019-20. Previous winners include Paul Scholes and Marcus Rashford.

"He's got an X factor," once said former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"Some attributes, it's not like a gift, but he's got the acceleration, pace, speed, that's a given for wingers and he's got qualities I like.

"He's a goals-scoring winger, he's confident, he likes to beat men, right foot, left foot, he's got a great attitude."

Club legend Rio Ferdinand recently added: "He’s [Elanga] hungry, he’s humble as a young player coming into the team and he’s just champing at the bit.

"I like the fact that he’s impacted games. Three away goals which is a big thing scoring away from home and he’s come on and contributed.

"I think that’s all you want as a young player to come on and not be anonymous, have an impact and he’s done that.

"I think he’s a really good example to all young players coming through – you bide your time, you get in and you’ve got to make your mark when you get in there. He’s doing well."
