Gareth Southgate names Kalvin Phillips on England bench but Leeds United man unlikely to feature

Gareth Southgate has named his starting lineup as England take on Italy in the third game of their Nations League group tonight. The Three Lions are currently bottom of Group C after losing 1-0 against Hungary and drawing 1-1 with Germany.

And Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been named on the bench for the game at Molineux - although it doesn't necessarily mean the midfielder will be fit to play. The format during these games has been that every player in the squad has always been named on the bench, so even if Southgate has no intention to play the Whites man, he can name him on the bench anyway.

Phillips hobbled off after just 15 minutes in the draw against Germany, with Southgate confirming he suffered a dead leg.

“It’s not ideal in any way shape or form to lose a really important player after 15, 20 minutes," Southgate said after the game. “Hopefully it’s not too bad. It’s quite a severe dead leg. Hard to know how long that will be.”

The England boss has gone for a much changed starint lineup, with AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori starting alongside Harry Maguire at centre-back. Southampton's James Ward-Prowse looks to have taken over Phillips' role alongside Declan Rice.

England play Hungary again on Tuesday, June 14, with Phillips hoping to be fit for an appearance in some capacity.

England starting lineup : Ramsdale; James, Maguire, Tomori, Trippier; Ward-Prowse, Rice; Grealish, Mount, Sterling; Abraham
