Gareth Southgate in line for money-spinning bonus if England can win World Cup in Qatar

Gareth Southgate is set to pick up a healthy bonus if England win the World Cup.

The Three Lions head into the tournament in Qatar as one of the favourites, having reached the semi-final in Russia back in 2018. England went one better at Euro 2020 but eventually lost out to Italy in the final.

In some quarters there is an expectation on England to go on and win the competition for the first time since 1966 - and Southgate would take home a nice sum of money if they do so. According to the Sun, the boss is in line to grab £4million if he can lead the Three Lions to glory - almost three times as much as the £1.5m he was offered to win the 2018 World Cup.

Southgate has already banked £500,000 for qualifying for the tournament, which gets underway in less than four weeks. England take on Iran in their first group game on November 21, before they face USA and Wales.

A source told The Sun: "Gareth has been offered bonuses for each stage of the World Cup and stands to pocket a fortune if he brings home the trophy. It's entirely normal that footballers and the management are incentivised.

"That said, Gareth is already on record as having described managing England as the highlight of his career. He is a proud Englishman and would love nothing more than to win a major trophy for the nation.

"His motivation is to ensure he and his team do their best for the country. Any money he earns along the way is incidental to that. He’s not financially driven and is very conscious of the cost of living crisis."

Following the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Southgate took a 30% pay-cut and did not take a rise in his basic salary when he was awarded a new three-year contract by the FA in November last year. His current deal is worth £6m a year and runs until 2024 - a wage that is higher than the likes of Frank Lampard and David Moyes.

It has been almost 12 months since the Three Lions' World Cup spot was secured following a 10-0 win over San Marino. In a group that included Hungary and Poland, England earned qualification with 26 points from a possible 30 as they progressed to Qatar.

Despite his success in recent years, Southgate is under pressure heading into the World Cup after the Three Lions' disastrous Nations League campaign, where they failed to win any of their six group games. This included two defeats against Hungary, failing to score in both in the process as England picked up just three points from a possible 18.
