Gareth Southgate announces first England World Cup team with tactical change

Gareth Southgate has opted to make the switch to a back four for England's opening World Cup match against Iran.

It's expected that Southgate would stick with his favoured five-man defence in Qatar, but the Three Lions boss has decided to adopt a more attacking approach against Iran.

Despite losing his spot at Manchester United, Harry Maguire has been selected to start alongside John Stones at the heart of England's defence. With Kyle Walker absent, the in-form Kieran Trippier has been selected at right-back with Luke Shaw operating at left-back.

Jude Bellingham has been given the nod to start alongside Declan Rice in midfield, with Mason Mount ahead of them in the No.10 spot.

In attack, Bukayo Saka has been selected ahead of Phil Foden to line up alongside Raheem Sterling - who was one of England's standout performers at Euro 2020 - and captain Harry Kane.

England will be hoping to get their Group B campaign off to the perfect start with a result against Iran, who are managed by Carlos Queiroz. The Three Lions also face fixtures against the United States and Wales.

Despite insisting in the build-up to the tournament that Kane would be donning the 'OneLove' armband - which was due to be worn to promote diversity and inclusion in Qatar - it was confirmed on Monday morning that the FA and other countries would no longer be wearing the armbands due to fears over sporting sanctions.

An FA statement on Monday morning said: "FIFA has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play. As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in FIFA World Cup games.

"We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.

"We are very frustrated by the FIFA decision which we believe is unprecedented – we wrote to FIFA in September informing them of our wish to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football, and had no response. Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways."
