Gareth Edwards' famous Barbarians jersey sells for £240,000 to set new world record

The Barbarians jersey Sir Gareth Edwards wore scoring THAT epic try against the All Blacks in Cardiff in 1973 has sold for a world record £240,000 at auction.

Dubbed “The Greatest Jersey”, it was the prize item up for sale as Edwards’ personal collection went under the hammer.

It was expected to go for between £150,000 and £200,000, but that estimate was surpassed, beating the previous record of £180,000 for All Black Dave Gallaher’s jersey sold for £180,000 for 2015.

There were some 39 lots in total, including jerseys worn by Edwards himself and ones donned by opponents during his career.

The second highest figure raised was £12,000 for one of the legendary scrum-half’s Wales jerseys from the 1977-78 season, while his shirt from the unbeaten 1974 Lions tour of South Africa went for £10,000 and Gerald Davies’ Lions jersey from the triumphant trip to New Zealand sold for £10,500.

Lions tracksuit tops from ‘71 and ‘74 went for £7,500 and £5,500 respectively, with other notable sales seeing a jersey worn by great All Blacks No 9 Sid Going raise £6,000 and one donned by Wales hooker Bobby Windsor going for £3,000.
