Gareth Bale 'worth a gamble' as Leeds United move backed by former manager

Gareth Bale's former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has urged the likes of Leeds United to take a gamble on signing the Welshman.

Bale's future is currently the subject of daily speculation, with reports of links to various clubs emerging and being shot down frequently. One thing that has remained a constant is Cardiff City's status as favourites, with Bluebirds fans desperate for a deal to be done that would bring the 32-year-old to his hometown club.

But former manager Redknapp reckons Bale has one more year in him at the top level.

“I would take a gamble with him if I was in the Premier League,” Redknapp said on talkSPORT.

“I think when he went to Tottenham, he didn’t really get the chance to play. He didn’t get a run. It seemed as though it wasn’t Jose [Mourinho]’s choice [to sign him].

“If I was an Everton or Leeds. Good clubs that take gambles, I would take a little gamble on him.

“The wages are a problem. But if he wants to play, then he’s not going to get £600k-a-week anymore. Them days are finished. He has had that. He doesn’t need it.

“I still think he can do it at the top level for another year.”

Bale's agents yesterday moved to knock down claims from Spanish side Getafe they had been in talks to sign Bale, with the UK still thought to be his preferred option ahead of November's World Cup.

Cardiff chiefs are believed to be in contact with Bale's representatives.
