Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey included as Rob Page confirms 26-man Wales squad for Austria World Cup play-off clash

Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey have both been included in Wales' squad for the World Cup play-off semi-final contest against Austria.

Captain Bale has made just two appearances for Real Madrid since turning out for his country against Belarus in November due to struggles with injury and coronavirus.

As for Ramsey, he has been restricted to just five appearances for new club Rangers, playing just 173 minutes of football since moving from Juventus to Scotland in January.

But both stars have, as expected, been named in Rob Page's squad for the contest with Austria at Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday, March 24.

In a significant blow to the Red Dragons, goalkeeper Danny Ward misses out after undergoing knee surgery.

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers said: "He just had an operation on his knee.

"It was just to clean up his meniscus so he's out for a number of weeks. It's something he's tried to play through. He virtually trains every day, pushing Kasper [Schmeichel]. He's been a very loyal, supportive no.2.

"It's very unfortunate for us and Wales that he couldn't carry on. It was a clean-up operation for him and that's why he hasn't been involved. It'll probably be towards the end of the season."

Ward's absence paves the way for Wayne Hennessey - who is two caps shy of his century for Wales - to feature in goal against Austria, with Adam Davies and Tom King also in the squad.

Kieffer Moore, David Brooks and Tyler Roberts are all unavailable, but Rabbi Matondo has been included following his impressive run of form with Cercle Brugge.

Due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the other semi-final contest in Wales' path between Scotland and Ukraine has been postponed. The game is expected to take place in June.

The winner of Wales v Austria will host either Scotland or Ukraine in the final in June to battle it out for a place at the Qatar World Cup later this year - with a date for the fixture to be announced by UEFA in due course.

A second fixture for the upcoming international break, which will be held on Tuesday, March 29, is yet to be confirmed.

Wales are bidding to reach a World Cup for the first time since 1958.
