Gardaí are now renewing their appeal for witnesses following the fatal accident which occurred at approximately 6.55pm on Wednesday,

A technical examination of the scene has been completed by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N2 at Drumgeeny between 6:30pm and 7:15pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

This tragic news comes a day after a man and woman, both aged in their 60s, were killed in a separate crash, also on the N2, near Castleblayney in Monaghan on Thursday.

It appears the two accidents happened just 24 hours and 15km apart on the same road with the local community reeling from the triple tragedy.

Gardai rushed to the scene of the horror crash between two cars and a lorry at around 6:15pm yesterday.

Officers attending the scene confirmed that two occupants of one car - a man and a woman in their 60s - were pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger of the second vehicle - a woman in her 60s - was critically injured and has been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Drogheda to be treated.

The road was closed to allow for an examination of the scene.

In a statement a garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N2 at Castleblayney between 6:05pm and 6:30pm, are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castleblayney Garda Station on 042 974 7900, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
