The search for a young man reported missing earlier this month has been stood down after a body was discovered.
Cathal Sweeney, 23, had been missing from Parliament Street in Waterford since January 5.
Gardai had issued an appeal for help in locating Cathal who was 5’ 6” in height, of slim build and with short black hair.
In a statement on January 22, they said: "Gardaí are seeking the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of 23 year old Cathal Sweeney who is missing from Parliament Street, Waterford, since Wednesday 5th January 2022.
"Cathal is described as being 5’ 6” in height, of slim build with short black hair. It is unknown what Cathal was wearing when he went missing.
"Anyone with any information that can assist Gardaí in locating Cathal is asked to contact Waterford Gardaí on 051 305 300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."
In an update on Sunday, gardai confirmed that the search had ended after a body was found in Bunmahon, Co Waterford on January 23.
A garda spokesperson said: "Following the recovery of a body in Bunmahon, Co. Waterford on 23rd January, 2022, the Missing Person appeal in respect of Cathal Sweeney, 23 years, has been stood down.
"An Garda Síochána would like to thank the media and public for their assistance in this matter. No further action is required and no further information is available at this time."
