Gardai spring massive bank holiday motorway checkpoint on motorists and list what they're asking for

Gardai in Tipperary carried out a huge motorway checkpoint on Friday as they began a weekend of road checks.

Officers set themselves up on the M7 in Nenagh where they were checking for drink and drug offences as well as licenses and insurance.

Two people were arrested at the checkpoint for being over the legal limit.

A garda spokesperson said: "Tipperary Divisional Roads Policing Unit accompanied by the Dog Unit and local Gardai carrying out a structured Checkpoint at the M7, Nenagh today. Functions being carried out include:

•Mandatory Intoxicant Testing for Drugs & Alcohol (2 Arrests).

•Drug Searches

•Driving Licence & Insurance offences

•Tyre & Vehicle safety checks"

Road units countrywide are out in their droves over the bank holiday weekend clamping down on "life-saver" offences after a number of deaths on Ireland's roads in recent days.

Gardai in Donegal said on social media: "This June Bank Holiday weekend, Gardaí across Donegal will conduct high visibility checkpoints and speed checks. Our focus will be the detection of key lifesaver offences which include speeding, drink/drug driving and the non-wearing of seat-belts."
