Gardai show just how easy it is for car thieves in video warning to drivers

Gardai have highlighted just how easy it is for thieves to steal items from a car in a new video warning to drivers.

2021 saw some great statistics for theft in Ireland - with incidents of theft from vehicles falling 29% and theft of bicycles down 11%.

But with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions earlier this year, we're starting to see incidents rise once again.

This has led officers attached to southeastern regions to issue a new warning for members of the public to be extra careful.

To help them out, they provided a video proving just how easy things can be for thieves.

A spokesperson explained: Great earning potential! Opportunistic thieves are grateful to the one in maybe 4 people who don't lock their cars while parked outside their houses.

"It means in mathematical terms if they try 40 car doors, they'll find 10 open. If they find valuable property, average 50 Euro in each car, they'll have a return of 500 Euro from trying a mere 40 car doors. That's a superb return."

The spokesperson continued: "THINK BEFORE LEAVING YOUR VEHICLE. LOCK ALL DOORS. MAKE SURE NO VALUABLES ARE IN SIGHT. BE SMART."
