Gardai rush to the scene as man, 60s, dies after crash in Co Longford

A man in his 60s has died after a collision in Co Longford on Thursday afternoon.

The incident between a car and an SUV happened at Cleenrath near Augnacliffe at around 4pm.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the area near Granard but the man, who was the sole occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene a short while later.

Two people travelling in the SUV were taken to Cavan Hospital where they are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardai have closed the road while a technical examination takes place, with local diversions in place.

They are appealing for anyone who may have seen the collision to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí at Granard are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in County Longford on Thursday, 20th January, 2022.

"Shortly after 4pm Gardaí and emergency services attended at the scene of a collision involving a car and an SUV on a local road at Cleenrath near Augnacliffe.

"The driver and sole occupant of the car, a man in his late 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

"The two occupants of the SUV were taken by Ambulance to Cavan Hospital. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

"The road is currently closed to allow for a technical examination to be undertaken by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.

"Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are also appealing to any road users with video footage from the location to make this available to them.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Granard Garda station on 043 668 7660, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."

The incident marks the third serious crash on Irish roads on Thursday.

Earlier, one man was left in a critical condition and three others were injured after a single-vehicle crash in Co Kerry at around 3.40am.

On Thursday afternoon, one man was killed and two other people were injured after a three-car pile-up on the M6 motorway in Co Galway at around 2pm.
