Gardaí renew appeal for information on Regency shooting after Gerry Hutch walks free from court

An Garda Síochána has renewed its appeal for anyone with information in relation to the murder and events at the Regency Hotel in 2016.

The renewed appeal comes following the verdicts of the Special Criminal Court delivered on April 17 in the trial for offences relating to the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel on February 5, 2016.

On Monday, Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch was found not guilty of the murder of David Byrne, with three judges at the Special Criminal Court deeming there was no clear evidence that Hutch was one of the shooters and he was cleared of murder.

The verdict came after 60-year-old Hutch left Wheatfield Prison in Dublin on Monday and entered the courtroom for the 11am hearing.

While Hutch was found not guilty, two co-accused men Jason Bonney and Paul Murphy were found guilty of providing a motor vehicle to a criminal organisation, with knowledge or having been reckless as to whether those actions could facilitate a serious offence by the organisation.

Now, in a statement released following the verdicts on Monday, An Garda Síochána said it was “continuing its investigation into the murder and events at the Regency Hotel on the date in question.”

The statement added that the investigation is ongoing and that investigators “remain convinced” there are still people with information who have not contacted Gardaí.

An Garda Síochána added in the statement: “This is an active ongoing investigation and investigators remain convinced that there are still individuals, with information relating to the events of February 5, 2016, who have not made contact with An Garda Síochána.

“We appeal to anyone with information, however insignificant it may appear to make contact in confidence with An Garda Síochána.”
