Gardai recover suspected murder weapon after body of Dublin man found in field

Gardai investigating the murder of a man whose body was dumped in a field have recovered the suspected murder weapon, the Irish Mirror can reveal.

Forensic officers were last night examining an apartment as part of the probe into the murder of 22-year-old Mahamud Ilyas. We have also learned two bin bags left outside a gated area for the property complex may prove “crucial”.

A man in his 50s is in Garda custody after being arrested yesterday morning in the Dublin 15 area. Mr Ilyas’ remains were discovered wrapped in carpet in a field in rural Co Meath on Saturday afternoon.

He lived in the west Dublin area with his family – who are originally from Somalia – but cops believe his body was driven to the area and dumped. Yesterday morning gardai sealed off an apartment in the Verdemont apartment duplex and a gated bin area about 100 yards away.

A senior source said: “Gardai have recovered a weapon which they believe was used to kill this young man and forensic tests are underway to confirm this.” Investigators suspect Mahamud – who was reported missing on Saturday – was murdered by someone he knew.

A Garda spokesman last night said: “A man in his 50s has been arrested by Gardai investigating the murder of Mahamud Ilyas. The man was arrested earlier today, Tuesday 13th December 2022, in the Dublin 15 area.

“He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Blanchardstown Garda Station.

“A domestic residence, also in the Dublin 15 area, been declared a crime scene and sealed off for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. The investigation is ongoing.”

After a postmortem, Mahamud was formally identified and his family informed of his death which has left his mother “heartbroken”. Gardai are continuing to appeal to anyone who spoke with him from after 10am on Friday to Saturday afternoon.

The spokesman added: “Anyone with information on the movements of Mahamud or any other information connected to this investigation are asked to contact
detectives.”
