But it was quickly established that the victim had been shot by accident. Both he and the hunter are not known to each other.

The firearm is legally held and the incident is not connected to any criminality. A source said: "This appears to be an unfortunate incident.

"The man who was injured thankfully is doing OK in hospital. The gardai are following all lines of inquiry but it does appear at this stage it is an accident."

The man who discharged the gun is assisting investigators at Swords Garda Station who are leading the probe. A garda spokesman confirmed the incident.

He said: "Gardai are making enquiries into the discharge of a firearm which occurred near the Laurestown area of Dublin on Monday, 12th June 2023. The incident occurred shortly before 11pm.

"A man, aged in his 40s, was later taken to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for treatment of what are understood to be non-life threatening injuries. Enquiries ongoing."
