Gardai play 'checkpoint bingo' as multiple law breaks found and driver arrested

Gardai were able to catch a person wanted on warrant - after a simple issue with a car that they were driving gave them away to a roads unit.

There are just over 14,000 Gardai in Ireland, some of whom are tasked to patrol around the towns and villages while others are given other duties like with the many Roads Policing Units around the country.

In Clare recently, one of these units got the person they had been looking for after a tire was damaged.

The officers involved thought it would be a routine stoppage, but they would discover even worse things once they realised what was going on with the driver.

A Garda spokesperson explained on social media: "Clare Roads Policing Unit observed this motorist driving with a damaged tire. The driver was found to be under the influence, a disqualified driver, and wanted on a warrant.

"Suspected heroin was found in the vehicle. Driver arrested, and proceedings to follow."

To tot that up, that's four law breaks and a potential for dangerous driving all rolled in to one incident.

It's no surprise the motorist was arrested, and people were quick to praise the Gardai for their response.

One man noted: "This sounds like checkpoint bingo."

Another said: "I am glad to know that this drive is taking off the road. Well done to everyone involved in taking him/her off the road."

While a third person wrote: "Well done to Clare RPU and thank you."

The penalty for drug driving is the same as for drink driving – a maximum of €5,000 fine and up to 6 months imprisonment on summary conviction.

The penalty for driving while disqualified is the same: a fine of up to €5,000 and/or a prison term of 6 months.

That's before we even come to what the warrant was for!
