Meanwhile, the DSPCA has also issued an urgent microchipping warning to pet owners following a series of rescues. The animal welfare group recently posted a statement on Instagram appealing for owners to book an appointment for microchipping, explaining how microchips can help them be reunited with their pet more easily.

The DSPCA said: "Your pet is your responsibility and we are asking every pet owner to make sure their pet is microchipped and registered to you, the owner. Missing pets can easily be reunited with their owners with just a simple phone call but it's up to you to make sure this can happen."

Irish law requires all dog to be microchipped by the time they are 12 weeks of age by a vet. They must also be registered on an authorised database under The Microchipping of Dogs Regulations 2015.
