Gardai issue warning over new phone call scam

Gardai are asking the public to be mindful of a new scam targeting people via phone.

Reports have emerged of people receiving suspicious phone calls falsely claiming to be from Immigration Service Delivery. Gardai are asking people not to engage with these calls as they are not authentic.

The Department of Justice also confirmed that people were receiving phone calls where the caller pretended to be an official from Immigration Service Delivery. They advised people to be cautious when receiving these calls and to avoid divulging personal details.

Gardai wrote on Twitter: " We would like to make the public aware of recent scam calls purporting to be from an official from Immigration Service Delivery (ISD). Do not to engage with these callers, do not to return calls to these numbers, and do not disclose any personal information."

The public were also warned recently of a new scam emerging on WhatsApp. Fraudsters are purporting via text to be people's friends and families in order to hack into their WhatsApp accounts.

People are advised to set up two step verification on their phones to safeguard their WhatsApp accounts. Experts also recommend that people verify the identity of people claiming to be their family or friends before engaging further in a text conversation.
