Gardai issue warning after camera captures child being carried across road as speeding driver approaches

Gardai have issued a warning for motorists to slow down after a photo captured a man crossing a road with a child in his arms as vehicles speed towards them.

Members of the force were carrying out speed checks on Wednesday on a busy road in Co Donegal.

Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit detected a number of motorists in breach of road safety rules on the dual carriageway near the town and in the Leck area.

Among these was one road user who was caught travelling at 151kph, 51kph above the speed limit.

A second motorist was found to be driving at 83kph in a 60kph zone.

These individuals were both issued with €80 fines and three penalty points.

In the course of carrying out the speed checks, gardai captured a man crossing the road with a child in his arms as oncoming traffic approached.

They urged people to slow down and to be particularly mindful of their speed when driving in built-up areas.

Gardai for the Donegal region said: "Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit conducted speed checks on the dual carriageway and in the Leck area yesterday and they detected a number of vehicles travelling in excess of the legal speed limit.

"One such vehicle on the dual carriageway (100KPH zone) was detected travelling at 151KPH and a vehicle at Leck was detected travelling at 83KPH (60KPH zone).

"The drivers were all issued with Fixed Charge Penalty Notices. (€80 fine and 3 penalty points.)

"You may notice a pedestrian with a child on their arm crossing the road in the photo below.

"When you are in a built-up area, be especially mindful of the speed at which you are travelling. Speed kills. Slow down."
