Gardai issue urgent warning over 'bailiff' email scam

Gardai are asking the public to show vigilance following the emergence of a new email hoax.

The fraudulent message accuses recipients of not paying outstanding invoices and claims that a bailiff will visit their property to seize valuables on a specified date. The reader is then informed they can avoid a bailiff visit by transferring €231.39 euro to their 'finance department'.

An IBAN is then supplied for recipients to send money through. The scam accuses people of having outstanding debts and claims that a search warrant has been obtained to visit the person's property.

An Garda Siochana wrote on Twitter: "Gardaí are aware of an e-mail based scam/fraud involving correspondence claiming to be from a Bailiff Service. Anybody who has received similar correspondence or may have engaged with this scam should contact their local Garda Station."

They also appeal to those who receive similar messages to avoid replying or engaging with the sender. Recipients are also asked not to click on suspicious links sent within unsolicited emails.

People who are unsure as to whether an email is legitimate are asked to verify its source. Those who believe they have been targeted by fraudsters should report the incident to Gardai.
