Gardai issue new appeal for information into death of alleged murder victim Bruna Fonseca

Gardai have renewed their appeal for information into the death of Bruna Fonseca who was killed in Cork on New Year’s Day.

The 28-year-old Brazilian woman was found dead at a Flat on Liberty Street in Cork at around lunchtime on January 1.

Gardai now want to talk to anyone who was on Liberty Street in Cork in the early hours of the morning that day, between 4.30am and 6.30am.

A spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Cork continue to investigate the death of Bruna Fonseca whose body was discovered in a residential property on Liberty Street, Cork City, on the morning of Sunday, 1st January 2023.

"Gardaí are now appealing for any persons that were on Liberty Street, Cork, either on foot or in a car, between the hours of 4.30am and 6.30am on the morning of 1st January 2023, to make contact with them.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bridewell Garda Station, Cork City, on (021) 4943330, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."

Ms Fonseca's former partner has since been charged with her murder.

Miller Pacheco, 29, originally from Formiga in Brazil, was living at Room 3, 5 Liberty Street, and appeared before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Monday, January 2.

He was charged in connection with the death of Ms. Fonseca. The court heard that Mr. Pacheco made no reply when the charge was put to him under caution. The charge was translated for him by an interpreter.

Mr Pacheco was remanded in custody to appear before Cork District Court again on January 9. He will appear by video link. Sgt Pat Lyons said that a translator would be required for the brief hearing.

Ms Fonseca was a native of Formiga in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and was a qualified librarian having graduated from the Centro Universitario de Formiga in 2018.

She moved to Cork in September of last year and worked as a contract cleaner at the Mercy University Hospital.
