Gardai issue appeal for information after Irish hospital consultant dies in fall

Gardai have issued a fresh appeal for information following the death of a hospital consultant in a fall during this year’s Tour de Kilkenny.

Father of two and consultant in emergency medicine Frank O’Dwyer was involved in a cycling incident on July 30 at Clashwilliam, Gowran, Co Kilkenny.

Mr O’Dwyer from Thornbrook Road, Kilkenny fell from his bike while out with a group of cyclists. In the aftermath of the accident he was rushed to Beaumont Hospital where he passed away three days later surrounded by his family members.

The St Luke’s Hospital consultant is survived by his wife Teresa, daughter Catherine and son Paul, mother Joy, brothers Philip, Joe, Pat and Michael, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces.

A garda spokesperson said today: “Our appeal for anyone with information, no matter how incidental it may seem on the circumstances around the fatal accident, to contact us still stands.

“The incident turned out to be a fatal road traffic collision as the man passed away. We are still seeking witnesses to the medical incident, which occurred in the Gowran area of Co Kilkenny at approximately 9:30am.

“Anyone who may have been in the area at the time should contact Goresbridge Garda Station at (059) 977 5202.”

The keen cyclist was a member of Marble City Cyclers and worked as a consultant in Kilkenny for 16 years. Prior to his appointment, he worked as a consultant in emergency medicine at Queen's University in Burton on Trent in the UK for 13 years.

Mr O’Dwyer was buried at St Colman’s Church cemetery, Clara, Co Kilkenny following his Requiem Mass at St Canice’s Church.

In a statement at the time of his death St Luke’s Hospital management expressed their sadness at his untimely and tragic death.

They said the doctor was a dedicated and valued member of the emergency department who provided "professional compassionate care to many of the citizens in Carlow and Kilkenny."

"We would like to extend our deepest condolences to his wife and family, along with many friends at this very difficult time. May he rest in peace”.
