Gardai have described a recent ‘day of action’ that resulted in many drivers being caught for road offences as officers work to safeguard Irish roads.
On Wednesday, the Roads Policing Unit was on patrol in Santry and stopped drivers for a whole host of law breaks.
Among them were motorists suspected of drinking and driving, driving while disqualified, and having no active insurance while operating a vehicle.

These rule breaks result in fines, penalty points, and in some cases, jail time.
A Garda spokesperson shared an image of some of the cars seized by police and wrote on Twitter: “The Santry Roads Policing Unit carried out a day of action recently: 1 driver was arrested on suspension of drunk driving, 2 drivers were found to be disqualified, 10 vehicles were detained for having no insurance.
“Proceedings to follow for all offenders”.
In Ireland, the current drink-driving limit is a BAC of 50mg. This means 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. For professional, learner, and novice drivers the limit is a BAC of 20mg.
Most people will have a BAC of 20 to 50mg after 1 standard drink.
The maximum penalty for drunk or drug driving is a €5000 fine and potentially imprisonment for up to 6 months.
All drunk driving offences result in disqualification from driving for at least 3 months.
If you operate a vehicle while disqualified from driving, or you are required to produce a certificate of competency or certificate of fitness before getting a driving licence but you fail to do so, you could be fined up to €5000.
In more serious cases, a driver can be imprisoned for up to 6 months or will receive both punishments of jail time and a hefty fine.
Finally, if you’re caught driving a vehicle that you are not insured on, you face a fine of up to €5,000.
You could also be hit with five penalty points and, at the discretion of the court, a term of imprisonment not exceeding 6 months.
