Gardai deploy stinger on suspected stolen car as teens and man arrested

Two teens and a man were arrested after gardai used a stinger to take down a suspected stolen car.

Officers tried to signal down the car on the Dundrum Bypass around 2am this morning, but the car allegedly failed to stop. Gardai then gave chase through south Dublin, before they deployed a stinger on the Edmondstown Road to stop the car.

The car, it was discovered, was reportedly stolen yesterday. Gardai say the two teens were released from custody pending a referral to the Garda Youth Diversion Programme, while the man, in his 20s, was charged and brought before Dun Laoghaire District Court this morning.

A garda statement reads: "Gardai arrested three males following the theft of a vehicle and dangerous driving in the early hours of this morning, Friday 24th February 2023. While on patrol at approximately 2am this morning, Gardaí signalled for a car to stop on the Dundrum Bypass. The vehicle failed to stop for Gardai.

"Gardai pursued the vehicle which was observed driving at speed and in a dangerous manner. A managed containment operation ensued. A stinger device was successfully deployed on the Edmondstown Road and the vehicle was brought to a halt.

"The car was subject to an unauthorised taking in south county Dublin yesterday, Thursday 23rd February 2023. Three males (two teenage juveniles and a male in his 20s) were arrested by Gardaí and taken to Dundrum Garda Station.

"The teenage juveniles were released from custody pending a referral to the Garda Youth Diversion Programme. The male, aged in his 20s, was charged in relation to this matter and appeared before Dun Laoghaire District Court on Friday morning."
