Gardaí charge two men in connection with murder of man found dead in Co Meath field

Two men are set to appear in court over the Garda probe into the murder of Mahamud Ilyas.

Gardaí said the pair, who were arrested on Wednesday, have now been charged and will appear at Blanchardstown District Court in west Dublin tomorrow morning.

Gardaí have been mounting a major investigation ever since the body of Mr Ilyas (21) was found wrapped in a carpet in a field near Ashbourne in Co Meath on December 10.

Mahamud lived in the west Dublin area with his family – who are originally from Somalia – but investigators believe his body was driven to the area and dumped there.

Gardaí confirmed the charges in a statement tonight.

A spokesman said: “Two men arrested on Wednesday, 4th of January, by Gardaí investigating the murder of Mahamud Ilyas, have now been charged.

“Both are expected to appear before a sitting of Blanchardstown District Court tomorrow morning, Friday 6th January 2023, at 10:30am.”

They were the fourth arrest in the murder probe.

A man aged in his 50s was arrested last month in the Dublin 15 area in connection with the murder and was detained at Blanchardstown Garda Station but was later released without charge.

A second suspect, a male in his late teens, was also arrested last month but was also released without charge.

A suspected murder weapon has also been seized and is being forensically examined.

Gardaí believe Mr Ilyas was beaten to death with a blunt instrument – but was also kicked and punched.
