A man has been arrested by gardai investigating the death of a former music teacher who died following an alleged fatal assault in Limerick last year.

Louise Muckell from Rathkeale, Co Limerick, was found with serious injuries at her home at Cois Deel at around 8.30pm on July 19 last year. She later died at University Hospital Limerick.

Gardai have not launched a murder investigation but sources said they believe Ms Muckell died from a violent attack.

Following her death, gardai harvested hundreds of hours of video footage from CCTV cameras and conducted house-to-house enquires to try and trace her last movements.

Ms Muckell, aged 54, was known locally as a “talented pianist” who taught music in the former Sisters of Mercy secondary school, in the town, before it closed.

In previous years she had been a “much sought after” singer at local weddings and funerals and lived alone in the Cois Deel estate, with a number of close relatives living in the local area.

In an update on the investigation today, a gardai spokesperson said: "This afternoon, Tuesday, 21st February 2023, Gardaí have arrested a man, aged in his early 50s, in connection with the fatal assault of a woman at a residence in Rathkeale, Co. Limerick on Tuesday, 19th July, 2022.

"He has been conveyed to Henry Street Garda Station, where he is currently detained pursuant to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"Investigations are ongoing."
