It’s understood she was pinned to a bollard by the vehicle in the incident. Sources have told the Irish Mirror the incident happened after gardai seized a car at a routine checkpoint.
The officer and colleagues were waiting with the vehicle to be towed when it allegedly rolled backwards.
She had to undergo an operation the following day and is now recovering.
In a statement, the force said: “A female Garda member was injured during an accidental occurrence during the course of her duties in Adamstown Co Wexford on Thursday.
"The officer was taken from the scene to hospital where she continues to receive treatment for a suspected broken leg.”
The force said the officer is receiving assistance from colleagues, the organisation’s peer support service and the chief medical officer.
It added she also has access to a 24-hour counselling service if required.
A spokesman for the Garda Representative Association said the incident underlined the dangers officers face in the course of their duties.
