The Garda was knocked to the ground and received what are said to be non life-threatening injuries. He was treated at the scene before being taken to Cork University Hospital for further treatment - CorkBeo reports.

It was the second hit-and-run incident involving a Garda in Munster in 24-hours after an off-duty officer was hit by a car in Limerick - an arrest has been made there. There, the officer, who has been named as Inspector Niall Flood, has lost a leg.

However, Inspector Flood could have lost his life if it was not for the quick action of a colleague, who responded to the 999 alert and gave him emergency treatment, applying a tourniquet to his injured leg by the roadside.

A Garda spokesperson said of last night's incident in Cork;"Gardaí are investigating a road traffic collision which occurred on the Monahan Road in Cork on the evening of Friday, 1st July."

"A motorcyclist collided with a Garda member (male) who was performing a checkpoint at the location at approximately 7pm. The vehicle failed to remain at the scene."

"The Garda member was subsequently taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment of his injuries. These injuries are not life-threatening."
