Garda issue warning after missiles thrown at cars from motorway bridges

Gardai have warned a motorist could be killed after a number of missiles were thrown at vehicles from bridges overlooking Irish motorways recently.

In one case, a rock is believed to have been flung from the M8 flyover outside of Cahir in Tipperary and hit a passing car undeath causing damage to the windscreen.

The driver, who was left shaken, had noticed a group of people on the bridge and was able to slow down before the incident.

After the object was thrown they were able to safely pull into the hard shoulder and inspect the damage caused.

Cops have launched a probe into the terrifying attack which happened on February 26 and are understood to be examining CCTV in the area in a bid to identify the group.

In recent months there have been similar incidents reported.

Sergeant Declan O'Carroll said: “Over the weekend gone by, there were incidents around the Cahir District.

"On Sunday evening a person driving on the M8 saw people on a bridge – these people then threw an item from the bridge which struck the windscreen causing damage.

"These are serious incidents and Cahir gardai are appealing to people to be aware of the potential fatal consequences of these actions."

In an interview with Tipp FM, he added: “It is a serious offence and this one is being fully investigated.”

Cops have also urged people to think about the consequences such actions could have.

They also called on anyone with information about the perpetrators to get in touch.

Over the years, several different types of missiles have been thrown at motorists in counties such as Dublin, Cork, Wicklow, and Meath.

In 2017, a woman claimed up to three kittens were flung from a moving vehicle on the M50 and killed by oncoming traffic.
