Garda checkpoints: Vehicle seized after driver avoids checks for over three years

Gardai from the Naas Roads Policing Unit were conducting a checkpoint in Rathangan, Co. Kildare, when they stopped a vehicle recently.

After carrying out some checks, gardai discovered the vehicle had avoided checkpoints for over three years as the car had not been taxed for 1104 days and had no valid NCT for two years.

Failure to display a current tax disc on your vehicle is considered a motoring offence and can result in a €60 fixed-charge fine issued by a traffic warden or a Garda.

A garda spokesperson said: "Naas Roads Policing Unit were conducting a checkpoint in Rathangan recently when they stopped this driver . It was found that their vehicle had not been taxed for 1104 days & it had no NCT for 2 years."

Elsewhere, DMR South Roads Policing Unit were conducting speed checks on the M50 when they detected this car travelling at 153kph in a 100kph zone.

After stopping the vehicle, gardai found that the car was also uninsured.

The driver may now face a fine of up to €5,000, five penalty points, and a term of imprisonment not exceeding six months at the court's discretion.

The court may also decide the driver should be disqualified instead of incurring penalty points.

In this case, they will be disqualified for two years or more for a first offence and four years or more in the case of a second offence committed within three years of the first.

Gardai seized the car, and proceedings are to follow.

The DMR South Roads Policing Unit also stopped a motorist after they were observed driving suspiciously.

Following a roadside test, the driver was found to be positive for cocaine.

The driver was arrested with proceedings to follow.
