Garda checkpoints: Six motorists fly past gardai in speed trap as motorway drivers face big fines

Gardai caught a number of motorists exceeding the speed limit by 40km/h on a busy motorway.

Members of the force from the Laois division were on patrol in the county on Monday when they spotted the rule breakers.

They gave the example of six vehicles travelling well in excess of the 120km/h limit on the M7.

The motorists were recorded driving at speeds ranging from 155 to 164 km/h in the zone.

These road users could now face proceedings after being caught for breaching safety laws.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Laois Roads Policing Unit on patrol today detected a number of vehicles travelling at high speeds on the M7.

"Proceedings commenced against the drivers."

Speeding carries a fixed charge fine of €80, together with 3 penalty points. You have 28 days in which to pay your fine from the date the notice issues to you. If you do not pay your fine, the fine then increases to €120 which you must pay within 28 days.
If after this time (56 days) you still have not paid your fine, the offence is referred to the courts. If you are convicted in court of speeding offences and non-payment of fines, you will automatically receive 5 penalty points and a fine up to a maximum of €1,000.
Elsewhere, Naas Roads Policing Unit conducted speed checks on the M4 recently when they detected this motorist travelling at 155km/h in a 120km/h area.
A Fixed Charge Penalty Notice was issued with proceedings to follow.

Gardai have been busy conducting checkpoints and patrols in recent days, with motorists caught for a range of offences.

Members of the force from the Dublin Castle Roads Policing Unit made several detections as they conducted a checkpoint in Swords over the weekend.

Two drug drivers were arrested and six vehicles were seized during this operation for a variety of offences.
