More than 200 vehicles were caught speeding out of the 44,004 clocked by the vans.

A statement on social media explained: "As part of ongoing Road Safety activities for the October Bank Holiday weekend, An Garda Síochána and GoSafe checked the speed of 44,004 vehicles on Saturday, 29th October.

"At total of 232 vehicles were detected travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit."

In total, over 120 people have been killed on Irish roads so far in 2022.

The most recent of them was a teenage girl in Kerry on Saturday evening.

The teenager was in the passenger seat in the only car involved in the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene at Derrymore East in Tralee.

The male driver of the car was taken to hospital.

The other occupants of the car were uninjured.

The road is currently closed in order for a technical examination to be carried out. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the main Tralee to Camp road, specifically Derrymore East, between 4:45pm and 5:30pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Tralee Garda Station on 066 7102300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
