Garda checkpoints Ireland: Almost 1,000 vehicles stopped in one area over Easter as multiple arrests made

Gardai stopped nearly 1,000 drivers across a huge operation on Easter weekend - with multiple arrests as a result.

Across 34 checkpoints stationed across the capital, officers launched 'Operation Meisce'.

'Meisce' is the Irish word for intoxication, with the checkpoints focusing mainly on drink and drug driving and the prevention of it.

Thankfully, the majority of drivers were compliant and passed with flying colours.

However, a select few were cuffed after failing the tests at the roadside.

A Garda spokesperson explained on social media: "Dublin Roads Policing Units carried out 34 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing Checkpoints over the Bank Holiday Weekend as part of Operation Meisce.

"Almost 1,000 motorists were tested. 17 drivers were arrested, 9 for positive alcohol tests & 8 for positive drugs tests."

It is an offence to drive in a public place in Ireland if you are too intoxicated to have proper control of your vehicle or have consumed more than the permitted amount of an intoxicant.

If you are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you will be automatically fined and disqualified from driving for a set period of time. Repeated or serious breaches may result in you being sentenced to prison.

If you are convicted of being too intoxicated to be in proper control of your vehicle, the minimum disqualification on a first offence is 4 years and 6 years for a second or subsequent offence.

The maximum penalty solely for drink driving is €5,000 or 6 months in prison or both.
