Garda checkpoints: Driver arrested after one simple mistake lands them in hot water

Gardai from the Naas Roads Policing Unit out on patrol stopped a driver after they appeared not to be wearing a seatbelt.

According to Irish law, all occupants of a vehicle are required to wear a seat belt at all times, no matter how long or short the journey is.

If you are over 17, you are responsible for wearing your seat belt.

Apart from the risk of being seriously injured, you are also at risk of being fined €2,000 if you are caught not wearing your seat belt.

Following a roadside test, gardai found the driver was under the influence of drugs and was arrested on the spot.

“Naas Roads Policing Unit stopped this driver for not wearing a seatbelt recently. The driver proceeded to test positive for cannabis and was arrested.

“Proceedings are to follow,” a spokesperson said.

In a separate incident, gardai from Naas Roads Policing Unit were out on patrol when they detected a vehicle travelling at almost double the speed limit.

Officers stopped a car after they observed it travelling at 183km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N7 at Kill.

The novice driver was then arrested and was charged with dangerous driving.
