Gardai arrest driver after catching them not wearing seatbelt - only to find drunk behind the wheel

A driver was caught out by Gardai after they spotted them not wearing their seatbelt- only to discover things were a lot worse than they expected upon inspection.

Officers were on patrol around Nenagh in Tipperary over the weekend when the Road Policing Unit clocked that another motorist had gone by them without the proper protection of a seatbelt.

Naturally, they pulled the driver over, but things were about to get an awful lot worse for the person behind the wheel as Gardai discovered a whole litany of law breaks.

A Garda spokesperson explained that the seat belt was just the "tip of the iceberg"

They noted that alongside the lack of seat belt (which is a minimum €60 fine and three penalty points by law), the car was missing the trio of insurance, motor tax and a valid NCT.

On top of that, the driver did not hold a driving license - and when Gardai got the Breathalyzer out, they were found to be a whopping nine times over the legal limit for alochol.

The current drink-driving limit is a Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.05. For professional, learner and novice drivers the limit is 0.02.

Unsurprisingly, they were arrested at the scene, with a court date to follow.

If you convicted of being too intoxicated to be in proper control of your vehicle, the minimum disqualification on a first offence is 4 years and 6 years for a second or subsequent offence.

The maximum penalty solely for drink driving is €5,000 or 6 months in prison or both.

People were quick to praise the force for their reaction, with one person commenting: "The maniac you caught today, should be brought out to see what you lads have to deal with on a daily basis. 9 times over the limit.

"Thank goodness he/she/it is off our roads, thank you An Garda Siochana" added a second.

A third chimed in with "How does somebody drive at 9 times over the limit tho ...I have 5 gins and can't get my key in the front door"
