Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad were shot dead live on camera while being taken for medical checkup in Prayagraj.

The shooting that occurred around 10 pm was caught on camera as mediapersons were following the handcuffed duo, who were being taken to the hospital by police for a medical checkup.

The gunmen were allegedly posing as mediapersons and shot at the brothers at close range.

At least three people, who posed as mediapersons, were seen firing from a close range at Ahmad (60) and Ashraf, who fell to the ground. Police soon overpowered the assailants.

"Nahi le gaye to nahi gaye (they did not take us, so we did not go)" were Atiq Ahmed\'s last words, when asked what did he have to say on not being taken to his son Asad\'s funeral.

The bullet-riddled bodies of Ahmad and Ashraf were taken away from the spot as tension gripped the area after the sensational killings.

The suspects have been identified as Luvlesh Tiwari, Sunny and Arun Maurya. They are under police custody and are being interrogated.

The three assailants had arrived at the spot in disguise of being media persons. They were even carrying a video camera, which is of some obsolete model. They were also carrying some self-made ID of an unknown media channel.

The deaths comes just days after Atiq\'s son Asad and his accomplice Ghulam -- both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case -- were shot dead in an exchange of fire with the Uttar Pradesh Police near Jhansi on April 13.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Prayagraj as the news of the twin murders spread. Additional forces are being rushed to the district where security has been beefed up.
