Gang war spreads across central belt with shots fired and homes firebombed

A "GANG feud" between organised crime groups has spread from Edinburgh to Glasgow.

Police have seen a surge in firebombings and homes being shot at in Glasgow and are treating them as linked to clashes seen in Edinburgh.

Reports have suggested the incidents are linked to a feud between associates of a well-known jailed Edinburgh gangland figure and others who are close to an international crime syndicate.

In March, shots were fired at properties in Niddrie's Marischal Crescent and West Pilton Bank, while there have also been fires at commercial premises in Edinburgh and Musselburgh.

A house fire on Hay Drive in Niddrie after the shootings has also been linked to the war.

Police Scotland have confirmed that the feud had reached Glasgow with homes on Ashgill Road in Milton and Gala Street in Riddrie firebombed.

A house was also torched on Meadow Court in Stepps on the same night.

During the early hours of Tuesday, a gang-related incident in Bishopbriggs when a business was deliberately set alight.

Detective chief superintendent David Ferry, of the Specialist Crime Division, said: “We have officers investigating a number of reports of discharges of firearms, fire-raising and vandalisms across the east and west of the country, which are all being treated as potentially linked at this time.

“These incidents could have had much more serious consequences and I want to make it clear this behaviour will not be tolerated.

“Significant enquiries are ongoing in relation to all of these incidents, and we are utilising all available resources to identify those responsible and bring them to justice."

Several arrests have already been made following five raids in Edinburgh. A number of items relevant to the investigation were also seized.

A 38-year-old man was arrested and charged with reset of a stolen motor vehicle. A 34-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with a stolen vehicle.

A 16-year-old was arrested over reset of a stolen vehicle, various road traffic offences, and possession of an offensive weapon. A 28-year-old man was also arrested and charged with threatening and abusive behaviour.

A 24-year-old man has also been charged in connection with two deliberate fires in Edinburgh linked to the feud.
