Gang kick in terrified pregnant Lenzie mum's front door and steal cars in dead of night

A heavily pregnant mum suffered a terrifying ordeal when thieves smashed through the front door of her Lenzie home while her family slept, stealing two cars.

Laura Mason, 35, was in bed with her partner Chris Kelly when their home was broken into at around 2.20am on Friday, January 13.

The mum-of-one ran to the front window and saw two men rush into the cars in the driveway, speeding away with them, the Daily Record reports.

Chris hurried to check on five-year-old daughter Willow who was asleep in her room before running downstairs. The 36-year-old reached the front door but was unable to open it as the keys had been stolen - meaning he was only able to watch on as their Audi A5 and Mini Cooper sped off.

Speaking to the Record, Laura, who is due to give birth to her second child in just eight weeks time, said: "It was just horrendous. We are in utter disbelief.

"We woke up to the noise of the door smashing in and I jumped out and looked out the window. When I saw the guys in the driveway I started screaming. At this point one of them was already in my car, the Mini, and one was getting into Chris's Audi.

"We witnessed the whole thing which was really traumatic. It's so hard to get the image out of my head."

Both of the cars were later recovered in Glenmavis and nearby Salsburgh, in North Lanarkshire but those responsible have not yet been identified.

An axe was discovered on the front seat of Chris's Audi alongside pre-made number plates which had been left on the backseat - as well as a hose - which looks to have been used to syphon petrol.

The cars have been taken away by officers for forensic testing and in the meantime, the couple have had to pay £160 for a hire car, as well as £980 for a new front door.

While she hopes the culprits will be caught, Laura said it will be hard to recover from the emotional impact.

The mum, who owns a hair salon in Lenzie, said: "I feel really vulnerable. You just never think it will happen to you. It's the mental aspect for us. The cars can be replaced, but what happened to us will take a long time to get over.

"Thankfully Willow didn't hear the front door being smashed but she was scared as she heard the commotion. My baby is also due in eight weeks so I don't know how this is going to affect me."

The couple have now had security cameras installed outside their home while the thieves remain at large.

Laura added: "We need to know they are caught because that would give us some closure after the horrific and terrifying experience that our family has been through."

Police Scotland confirmed enquiries into the incident are ongoing and officers are appealing for anyone with any information to get in touch.

A spokesperson the force said: "Two cars which had been reported stolen from the Millersneuk area of Lenzie around 2.20am on Friday, January 13, have been traced.

"That evening the black 67 plate Mini Cooper was recovered in Greengairs around 5.30pm. The white 2015 plate Audi A5 was found in the Salsburgh area around 6.40pm."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 quoting incident 0218 of January 13.
