The Thiruvananthapuram Rural police have detained three youths who allegedly unleashed a wave of violence in a residential locality near Perumathura late on October 30. Two persons had sustained critical injuries after the gang purportedly hurled country bombs at two houses and vandalised several properties, sparking heightened tension in the area.
The Kadinamkulam police took into custody three persons, Akash, Abdul Rahman and Safeer, in connection with the incident. The suspects, who are residents of Attingal and Chirayinkeezhu, are habitual offenders who have been involved in many criminal cases in the region. Their arrests are yet to be recorded.
The incident took place at Madanvila around 10.30 p.m. on October 30. The car-borne gang hurled country bombs at some houses before attempting to barge into an aged couple’s house. They also vandalised cars in the area using swords before fleeing the area.
Two people, identified as Arshid and Hussain, both natives of Madanvila, were injured in the attack. While they were initially rushed to the Chirayinkeezhu taluk hospital, the duo were soon referred to the Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Arshid, a former Chirayinkeezhu constituency president of Youth Congress, underwent emergency surgery and remained critical in the hospital intensive care unit.
The police suspect the violence to be linked to an altercation that had unfolded between some local residents and a group of outsiders at Madanvila earlier in the day.
