'Game Of Thrones' Pie Is An Edible Work Of Art

A Los Angeles-based baker has stunned Reddit’s “Game of Thrones” community with an intricately designed pie featuring Daenerys Targaryen and one of her dragons.

Daenerys Mother of Dragons can now add “Queen of Curd” to her lengthy resume thanks to a baker from Los Angeles. Daenerys, the de facto protagonist in HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones,” was the artistic inspiration for a peach, lemon curd, and raspberry filled pie that got stomachs rumbling on Reddit Tuesday afternoon.

The pie was created by Liz Joy who shared a photo of her creation on Reddit’s r/gameofthrones community where it shot to the top of the front page with more than 22,000 votes and 480 comments.

I’ve been on the edge of my seat through every season of ‘Game of Thrones’ and wanted to create an edible tribute to mark the upcoming final season,” Joy told me. “Daenerys Targaryen has been one of my favorite characters from the start, and I’m known for creating fem-forward portrait cookies, so thought she would be the perfect subject for this piece. One of the unique design aspects about pie art is coordinating the pie filling as part of the scene, so I decided to go with a fiery element and added in one of her dragons to challenge myself.”

From start to finish, the pie took a total of three days to design, bake, and decorate, she said. Joy turned to baking three years ago after a lengthy stint as an art director for a Hollywood agency. After getting sick and ultimately resigning, Joy prioritized her health and picked up baking as a hobby. Today, her baking has evolved into something more.

“I posted my first decorated cookies a little over three years ago and they happened to catch the attention of some well-known names, which quickly turned my accidental hobby into a legitimate business. I’m still a home baker (no storefront) and am currently focusing on food-centric content creation and teaching cookie decorating techniques,” Joy said.

The final season of “Game of Thrones” will premiere Sunday, April 14, on HBO.
