Game of Thrones' Iron Throne comes to Cardiff as spin-off House of Dragon premieres

Game of Thrones fans have many reasons to be excited as the prequel to the George RR Martin-penned hit show, House of Dragon is set to air soon. To celebrate the new series the famous Iron Throne is going on tour around the UK and is coming to Cardiff.

House of Dragon will air on Sunday, August 21 on HBO Max in the US and it will air at the same time in the UK on Sky Atlantic, too, and fans will be able to get their first taste of the series by getting the chance to rule from the Iron Throne. Forged by the first king of the Targaryen dynasty, King Aegon, from the swords of his defeated enemies, The Iron Throne is the stuff of legend for Game of Thrones fans.

The Iron Throne has visited Cardiff before but now with a new look, the throne will be back in Cardiff on Wednesday, August 17, and Thursday, August 18. You will be able to visit the throne at St David's shopping centre. You can keep up to date with the latest What's On news by signing up to the newsletter here.

Other confirmed tour locations for the throne are London and Edinburgh. Welsh star Rhys Ilfan will be appearing in the series that includes an impressive cast list of Matt Smith and Olivia Cook. You can see the first look of Rhys in House of Dragon here.

Rhys will play Ser Otto Hightower, Lady Alicient’s (Olivia Cooke) father and the Hand of the King. The synopsis for Ifans' character reveals that Ser Otto is a “bitter political rival of Prince Daemon” who will be played by former Doctor Who actor Matt Smith.

The new series promises lots of combat, tyranny, and of course, dragons as it follows the bitter civil war over the throne. Game of Thrones has starred many Welsh actors in the previous series including Iwan Rheon as Ramsay Bolton, who played an imitate gig in Newport in 2021, and Owen Teale as Ser Alliser Thorne. You can read more about Owen here.
