Game of Thrones fans divided over Arya's 'uncomfortable' sex scene

Game of Thrones fans are divided over a scene in Game of Thrones season 8 episode 2 recap: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms which sees Arya Stark lose her virginity.

Despite Arya becoming a badass throughout the seasons killing her way through the Seven Kingdoms seeing her have sex proved too much for some.

The youngest Stark ( Maisie Williams ) had sex with her friend Gendry ( Joe Dempsie ) ahead of the White Walkers arriving in Winterfell in Game of Thrones episode two's unexpected scene.

Arya was seen asking him about his past lovers as she revealed she was a virgin.

"We're going to die soon. I'd like to know what it's like before that happens," she told Gendry.

They were later seen in bed as the camera panned over them.

Viewers were torn over the scene, however, with some thinking it was romantic - he did just forge her a dragon glass weapon after all - and others saying it left them "uncomfortable".

Most of the conflict comes over Williams age, while she's now 22, she was just 11 when the show started, leaving many feeling like they were "watching a little sister".

"An Arya sex scene is something I could have lived without," said one fan.

"The Arya and Gendry sex scene will literally have fans conflicted until the next bombshell next week," said another.

"But for real. The sex scene between Arya and Gendry felt a bit weird. Feels like they rushed the romance too quick," said one referring to the sizzling sexual chemistry at the start of the episode escalating to sex.

Others felt like they'd been waiting a long time for the two to get together though.

"Arya and Gendry FINALLY together" tweeted one fan.

"Arya is 18, in full control and making a choice. She's having probably the least weird, and most empowering consensual interaction in the whole show. Ever. EVER" said another.

Game of Thrones season 8: Maisie Williams thought Arya nude sex scene was prank when she read the script and Dempsie, 31, also found it a little weird. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly after the episode aired he said: “It’s obviously slightly strange for me because I’ve known Maisie since she was 11, 12 years old. At the same time, I don’t want to be patronizing toward Maisie — she’s a 20-year-old woman. So we just had a lot of fun with it.”

Fans also remembered the show's pilot where the then-kin Robert Baratheon tells Nedd Stark, Arya's father, "I have a son, you have a daughter. We will join our houses."

How prophetic. Of course, they were talking about Sansa, the elder Stark, and the heir Joffrey, but there's no denying it's a nice link back.

If Arya getting it on with Gendry was all too much, then just remember that George R R Martin originally wanted her to fall for Jon Snow.

Game of Thrones season 8 episode 2 recap: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

When he was laying out the plot for the original book franchise A Song of Ice and Fire in 1993 he said Arya would have fallen for Snow after joining him as he journeyed to the Wall.

His plan read: "Wounded by Lannister riders, they will seek refuge at the Wall, but the men of the Night's Watch give up their families when they take the black, and Jon and Benjen will not be able to help, to Jon's anguish.

"It will lead to a bitter estrangement between Jon and Bran. Arya will be more forgiving... until she realises, with terror, that she has fallen in love with Jon, who is not only her half-brother but a man of the Night's Watch, sworn to celibacy.

"Their passion will continue to torment Jon and Arya throughout the trilogy, until the secret of Jon's true parentage is finally revealed in the last book."

There's enough incest in Game of Thrones without Arya and Jon thanks - he's just sticking to his aunt rather than his half-sister. Much better...maybe?

Game of Thrones is in its eighth and final season - and most expensive - with the last few episodes airing Sundays on HBO and Mondays 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
