Gambling Regulations In The Biggest American States In 2024

If you are in the middle of planning your next gambling trip, this update will definitely help you stay in check with the meanings of legislative gambling regulations in the US.

BetMGM has an interesting study based on eight ranking factors, scoring states from 0 to 100  based on how good their gambling tourism is. We will take some of the top states from the  BetMGM and update you on their legal status in gambling.

Nevada's Current Legal Gambling Status

And how can we kickstart this article if not with the mother of Vegas? Obviously, Las Vegas,  Nevada, has the most developed gambling tourism services in the US. Being the number one  destination for gambling enthusiasts, Nevada has more than 440 active casinos. It may sound  surprising, but only 7% of the people who travel to Vegas go there to gamble.

In terms of offline gambling regulations, Nevada is permissive enough to those trying to start  a business in this sector. Things get more complicated when people try to gamble from outside  the State's borders.

The online gambling environment in Nevada only allows players to place sports bets and play  online poker. Any other form of online casino-style gambling activity is forbidden.

If you are more passionate about offline gambling, this is the realm of opportunities. Every  type of slot and casino game is permitted.

Louisiana

Even if Louisiana flourishes when it comes to tourism, accommodation, and entertainment,  the State has an interesting background in gambling regulation. For a short period of time,  from 1835 to 1851, Louisiana would ban gambling completely. Since then, things have been  a little bit different.

Any type of online gambling is completely illegal, so expect to see no online casinos licensed in Louisiana. But if you happen to find yourself wandering the streets of this State, there are some forms of gambling you can opt for.

Video bingo, fantasy sports, video poker, land-based casino gambling, and state lottery or kenos are permitted. We would advise you to obey the laws of Louisiana because the fines and consequences for illegal gambling are not pleasant at all.

New Jersey

This State is one of our favorites, too, even if the State has absolutely no approved New Jersey online casinos. We know this from an official communication to the NJ Attorney General's  Office made a couple of times. There are a lot of people from New Jersey who are still betting on online websites and casinos that allow these people to join their platforms, but to be clear,  it is not happening on legal premises.

However, New Jersey has nine commercial casinos, of which there are a total of 22 licensed  in the whole state. It is a pretty stringent state when it comes to gambling, but if you want to  see why so many people love to go there, try the Atlantic City casinos or the Ocean Resort  Casino.

Oklahoma's Gambling Regulations

Oklahoma continues to be one of the states that refuses to clearly regulate their online and  offline gambling. What we know right now is what was last updated in 2004 when they legalized physical casinos that were built on Indian reservation land. You may know them as tribal casinos.

There are more than 100 casinos across the State, and people can go there for live gambling and to try all kinds of casino table games and slots. If casino-style gambling is not your top pick, on-site horse racing should do it. Oklahoma also organizes charity bingo and commercial bingo but also has a state lottery.

We have to warn you that if you are involved in any other form of commercial gambling, you risk getting a punishment of up to 10 years in jail or a fine of up to $25,000, depending on the situation.

North Dakota

North Dakota deserves a mention in our top, but its legal status is very similar to the one in  Oklahoma. They still have to find a way to effectively regulate online gambling. In present  times, there are no clear laws to clarify under what legal circumstances people from Oklahoma  can or cannot gamble online.

New Mexico

New Mexico does not allow anyone to place bets at online casinos. According to New Mexico  Statutes 30-19-1, at Gambling Definitions, the State explicitly says that any form of online gambling is illegal, except as pursuant to Indian Gaming Compact

Other than that, you can go to any brick-and-mortar casino and start betting on slot machines,  pull tabs, casino table games at tribal casinos, bingo, raffles, and state lotteries.

Another interesting fact about New Mexico is that it allows sweepstakes as long as they are part of business goal planning.

Last Words

The main common aspect about gambling in the United States is that the majority of them ban  online gambling or do not regulate it enough. Only some of the states are popular for their  gambling services, so please make sure you do your own research before trying to gamble in  any of the 50 states.
