Galloway Hydro Scheme strike action averted as new pay deal accepted

Strike action at the Galloway Hydro Scheme has been averted.

Unite union members at Glenlee power station had voted for action after rejecting an eight per cent pay offer from operators Drax Hydro.

However, they have now accepted an improved offer of eight per cent along with a one off £1,500 payment and an extra day’s holiday.

Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham, said: “Unite’s members at Drax Hydro secured this significantly improved wage offer because they were prepared to take strike action for a fair wage, backed by their union all the way.

“Unite is pleased to have successfully negotiated this valuable deal and to enhance the jobs, pay and conditions of our members during this cost of living crisis.”

Meanwhile, Drax has handed a funding boost to local food banks.

The firm donated £22,000 to a variety of organisations, including homelessness charity Shelter and food banks near the Galloway Hydro Scheme.

Head of community, Shona King, said: “Drax has a long history of supporting charities, and it’s important that we and other businesses do so now more than ever as people are struggling with the ongoing cost of living crisis.”
